For a long time, performance meant doing more. Today, it means producing less impact. At Aréa, this shift feels natural: since the company was founded in 1987, our approach has always been guided by efficiency, moderation and attention to resources.
To better understand our environmental impact, we conducted a carbon footprint audit. The result, equivalent to the annual emissions of 219 people in France, provided a useful benchmark for improvement. More than comparing ourselves to others, the goal is to progress over time and reduce our own footprint.
This reflection reinforces a principle that has always shaped our work: less is more. In design, production and logistics, doing better often means using fewer materials, less energy and less transport.
From the start, our products have been developed through a cost-conscious approach similar to design-to-cost. By eliminating unnecessary elements and producing locally, within 100 km of our Toulouse headquarters, we naturally reduced materials, transport and energy use. In many ways, eco-design grew out of this culture of efficiency.
Durability is another key factor. Public-space furniture must be robust and long-lasting. Some of our best-selling designs date back to the late 1980s and early 1990s and are still widely used today. Their longevity is supported by timeless design, repairability and the absence of fragile technological components.
Our carbon assessment is therefore not an endpoint but a starting point. Steel alone represents around half of our carbon footprint, although more than 90% of the steel we use already comes from recycled sources. Our next step is a decarbonisation plan and a new assessment in 2027.
Across the company, initiatives are multiplying — from photovoltaic panels covering half the energy needs of our Flourens factory to improved equipment, energy-saving measures and closer collaboration with suppliers.
Step by step, this collective effort reflects our conviction that the most sustainable solutions are often the simplest: consume less, design better and make things last longer.
