A New Look for Brno-Královo Pole Railway Station: Challenges, Choices, and Future Visions

presented by Metalco

The project to rebuild the Brno-Královo Pole railway station is part of a broader plan to renovate the Czech Republic’s railway infrastructure. Initially, a simple renovation of the existing building was planned, but the complexity of the work and the obsolescence of the structure led to the decision to demolish the original building and construct a completely new one.

The structure of the building was defined first, followed by the selection of materials that would enhance it. At the request of the railway institute, the roof was designed with a specific curvature, aimed at reducing the volume to be heated and, consequently, energy consumption.

The street furniture, designed by Metalco, was also carefully studied to integrate with the building’s striking shapes and create an interesting contrast with the natural elements of the surroundings. Different styles were chosen for the outdoor spaces, the main lobby, and the upper floor, with the aim of maintaining a strong visual and functional link with the railway environment. Some elements, such as the planters, have been adapted to harmonize with the ANASTASIO benches in PDM (reconstituted stone) concrete.

The interior spaces feature planters and benches from the DIAMANTE collection in PDM (reconstituted stone) concrete, equipped with wooden seats and backrests, and Corten BAMBU’ steel planters. Outside, in contrast to the geometry and colors of the main façade, white and gray STONE seats in HPC (High Performance Concrete) were installed. The space was delimited by QUICK painted steel bollards.

The collaboration with engineers and technicians was coordinated by a key figure, Metalco’s official distributor (Lacitta) in the Czech Republic, who facilitated the management of the more technical aspects and the choice of products. Strict safety regulations also played an important role in determining the design choices and materials used.

The hope is that the renovated station will offer a pleasant and functional experience for passengers and visitors.
