A Historical Landscape Transformed
Färjenäsparken is a 15-hectare park located on Hisingen, at the northern abutment of the Älvsborg Bridge in Gothenburg. The area boasts a rich history dating back to the very birth of the city. Commissioned by the City of Gothenburg, Mareld has been instrumental in transforming this historic site into a versatile urban park, designed to accommodate both daily recreation and large-scale public events. The project was realized through a close and integrated collaboration with Skanska throughout the design and construction phases.
The project’s centerpiece is the Pelouse—a vast central lawn where visitors can experience the surrounding post-industrial landscape, iconic landmarks, and the vibrant maritime life along the river. This open space is framed by two “eco-designed” forest edges. By recreating large, free-growing ecological borders with a carefully selected composition of species, these areas will develop high biodiversity over time. These multilayered plantations function as stable ecosystems, similar to natural groves, offering resilience against diseases and providing vital ecosystem services for local flora and fauna.
Sustainability was a core pillar of the technical design. To address soil contamination, the new planting beds were placed on top of the existing ground (over-heightening). This strategy effectively encapsulated the toxins, eliminating the need for extensive excavation and the transport of hazardous materials. Furthermore, large volumes of stormwater are managed through open green systems. This allows the water to be purified and delayed before reaching the river, while ensuring it never meets the underlying contaminated soil.
Social Inclusion The park’s design was shaped by a comprehensive citizen dialogue, ensuring it meets the needs of the rapidly growing neighborhoods along Gothenburg’s northern riverbank. Safety, social presence, and inclusion have been guiding principles throughout the process. Through strategic lighting and thoughtful spatial planning, Färjenäsparken has been crafted as a secure and welcoming destination, a city park for all Gothenburgers to enjoy.
