Uderzo Schoolyard

Designed by Espace Libre

Location: France — Type: School — Built: 2024 Show on Google Maps

The Uderzo Schoolyard is part of the ambitious “Cours Oasis” initiative, a program dedicated to transforming conventional schoolyards into vibrant, nature-based spaces that respond to today’s environmental and social challenges.

Developed in alignment with the “Green Plan” of Mantes-la-Jolie, the project focuses on climate adaptation and urban well-being. By introducing more vegetation, enhancing natural cooling, and promoting biodiversity, the new courtyard helps to mitigate the urban heat island effect while offering students a refreshing and inspiring environment.

At the heart of the design is a fluid and inclusive approach to space. Instead of dividing the courtyard into fixed zones, the project creates a continuous landscape where activities can overlap, interact, and evolve naturally. This spatial flexibility allows every child to find their own rhythm; whether seeking quiet reflection, active play, or social interaction.

A carefully composed network of play landscapes connects the different parts of the courtyard, encouraging exploration and creativity. From small, sheltered areas to open, dynamic spaces, the design offers a variety of scales and atmospheres that adapt to diverse needs and moments throughout the day.

More than just a playground, the Uderzo Oasis Courtyard embodies a new vision for educational spaces — one that blends design excellence with ecological sensitivity. It’s a place where nature, learning, and community come together, shaping a healthier, more resilient environment for future generations.
