1 May / Call for Submissions: Thresholds 55 – Property

News

Thresholds, the annual peer-reviewed journal produced by the MIT Department of Architecture, invites submissions for issue 55, titled “Property,” edited by Maia Adele Simon and Hana Nikčević.

The issue examines property as both a material possession and a conceptual attribute, addressing its unstable and constructed nature. Rather than a fixed category, property is framed as contingent and relational, shaped through social agreements and systems of power that regulate access, ownership, and exclusion.

The call situates property within a broad cultural and historical field—from land enclosure and legal frameworks to artistic representation, environmental governance, labour, and protest. It points to the role of property regimes in structuring spatial, economic, and political relations across contexts.

Submissions may include scholarly essays, critical writing, and artistic contributions that interrogate how property operates across architecture, art, and spatial practice.
